A few weeks ago, I woke up (as I tend to do), cracked open my laptop, and checked out the news as I readied myself for The Day Ahead. Email, Tweetdeck, SFGate, LinkedIn, FilmDrunk, Reddit... Oh! What's this? There's a piano on top of Bernal Heights Park?
I checked the time of the post - it was only a few hours old. If this random post were true, I figured, then the piano would most likely still be there intact and operational. And as I live in Bernal Heights (about 500 meters below the purported location of the piano), it wouldn't be too much of an investment to determine if this random Reddit info was bullshit or legit. I climbed up to check it out.
I heard the swirling notes before I crested the hill and got excited. And as I reached the top, well... shit. Would you fucking look at that! There actually is a piano up here.
I've always been a big fan of the piano but sadly cannot play a damned thing. I ham-fisted a few notes and did my best Rachmaninov-played-by-a-Thalidomide-Kid routine but then left the instrument in the capable hands of a guy named Max from LA who rocked out the Star Wars Theme will aplomb.
The Piano Incident was a big hit and was 'all over the Internet' for the next couple days.
Here's a great breakdown by one of those responsible - The Bernal Heights Piano Incident(s)
And Bernalwood was all over it (and posted my Star Wars Piano video!) - Scenes and Video from "The Great Bernal Heights Renegade Piano Recital".
