Emo Kids In Mexico

Emo Seems that we've got a Mexican Quadraphenia going on south of the border.

To date, I have stayed out of this whole 'emo' business. Kind of watched it from the sidelines while commenting smugly to myself about 'when I was a kid.' Let me pipe in real quick by quoting other people.

Basically, a bunch of emo kids are getting their asses kicked in Mexico and now the Hot Topic set is wringing their soft, white hands with a delicate fury. I'm not even going to look at what the MySpace hive has to scream about this.

Metafilter has an excellent comment string going on about the origins of emo, eyeliner and death metal. (Side note: this is why I continue to frequent Metafilter; smart people.) Best quote:

It's like some weird retread of the epic skinz/longhair wars that broke out after some genius decided to pair the Cro-Mags and German thrash metallers Destruction for a US tour back in the 80s. The Straightener

Really, any discussion of the term 'emo's association with 80's DC punk rock should probably cease.

Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes

18snap_sun0 THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, INDIA: At least 50 people in Kottayam district have reportedly lost their vision after gazing at the sun looking for an image of Virgin Mary.

Though alarmed health authorities have installed a signboard to counter the rumour that a solar image of Virgin Mary appeared to the believers, curious onlookers, including foreign travellers, have been thronging the venue of the ‘miracle’

There is a great lesson in here somewhere. Something about the dangers inherent in seeking that which does not exist... about how far people will go to see Magic - even to their own physical detriment... lack of basic knowledge and it's impact on the poor and uneducated... the desperate need for people to believe in Something Greater Than Themselves. Sad, really. If only someone had a decent grilled cheese laying around somewhere.

At least I have a good song for this entry. Thievery Corporation: Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes

Runnin' With The Ambient Devil

DevilJeez, the music blogs have all been aflutter with an MP3 of David Lee Roth's isolated vocals from the Van Halen classic 'Runnin' With The Devil. Just the vocals - no instruments.

I remixed it, nothing fancy - listen

Yes, I'm livin' at a pace that kills!

I Am A Time Waster

Full-out genius viral thing for something called Breaking Bad. I'm not going to check out the site because then the ad would have worked and I'd be a sucker. Or am I already a sucker for posting my version? Of course, I am. But I want to minimize sucker-ness.
